This insurance company was originally formed by a group of farmers who had lost a lot of land and property due to the problem of fire. However, later on the name of the company was changed to Donegal Mutual Insurance Company. The company has been serving the public since 1889 and has been doing so quite remarkably.

The company saw a steady growth during the 1990s. However, it was during the period of 2001 and 2002 that the company was able to take huge steps towards success and was able to build a reputation for itself.

Donegal Mutual Insurance Company merged along with many of the other subsidiaries and managed to streamline its corporate structure in the best possible manner. In 2001, the Pioneer Insurance Company and the Delaware Atlantic Insurance Company were merged into the Atlantic States Insurance Company. Similarly, in 2002 Pioneer Insurance Company of Ohio was also merged into the Atlantic States Insurance Company.

The Donegal Group was also able to successfully acquire Peninsula Insurance Group along with Le Mars Insurance Company in 2004. However, the success story of the Donegal Insurance Company does not end here. In 2008 the Donegal Group successfully acquired the famous Sheboygan Falls Insurance Company. This is the most recent success of the Donegal Group.
